The Yoga Sutras say a posture should be both sthira (stable) and sukha (comfortable). Headstand, known as the “King Asana”, requires physical strength, and calmness of mind to feel both stable and at ease while in it.
If you’ve heard teachers offer headstand in class but haven’t actually been taught how to approach the pose, want to refine your alignment to make sure you’re not putting your body (specifically the neck) at risk of injury, or if you’re a headstand pro and are ready to add funky variations and ways to transition, this 4-week series is for you!
I am so excited to co-teach this virtual workshop series with fellow Boston yoga teacher, Eva Christopherson We will meet via Zoom every Monday for the month of May for 1 hour, teaching and demonstrating the tools needed to build the strength and flexibility required for headstand. Each week will progress from the previous one.
Class dates are: May 4th, May 11th, May 18th, and May 25th from 5:15pm-6:15pm.
Skills we will go over include:
Building a foundation - poses to practice on your own that will help you to get in the direction of being able to bear weight on your head/neck
Proper alignment so you can practice and hold a safe headstand decreasing the risk of injury
Modifications - if you are brand new to this pose or working with an injury, we will teach you ways you can still practice so that you maintain the strength in your body to eventually get up, or similar poses that will give you the same benefits if you don’t want to bear weight on your head!
Advanced variations of the pose and fun transitions into other poses from headstand once you can safely hold the pose!
Benefits of Sirsasana (headstand):
